YLI Blog - Photographic file types

Which file type is best?

When it comes to digital photography, there are three main file types that photographers generally work with: RAW, JPEG, and TIFF. Each type has its own benefits and drawbacks, so it's important to understand the differences before deciding which one is right for you.

RAW files are unprocessed data straight from the camera sensor. They offer the greatest flexibility when it comes to post-processing, but they also require more storage space and processing power. JPEGs are compressed images that are ready to be used immediately after they're taken. They take up less space than RAW files, but they offer less flexibility for editing. TIFF files are uncompressed images that offer the highest quality, but they also take up a lot of storage space and can be slow to process.

Ultimately, the best file type for you will depend on your needs and preferences. If you want the highest quality images possible, go with RAW files. If you need smaller files that are easy to use, JPEGs are a good option. And if you need something in between, TIFF files might be the way to go.
